Institution Research

The music industry currently appeals to a mass audience of the genre of music I am exploring: Pop/Rock through many ways. As pop music is the genre of music that is most current in the charts, it is available in many ways through the media for individuals to consume – for example, it is sold via the Internet to be streamed and downloaded which can then be played through phones, tablets and laptops, it is available on CD, available to be bought and listened to on TV and can be consumed via the radio.

Furthermore, artists that produce pop music are usually perceived as ‘starts’ – therefore, they have a huge fan base which helps promote and sell their products easily. They also bring out merchandise to expand their market, increasing their popularity and appealing to their audience further.

Institution Profile

An institution is an organisation/company founded for a professional or social purpose. In the music industry, different institutions air different music - due to the reason that everyone has their own preferred genre of music.

Examples of different radio stations:
  • BBC Radio 1
  • BBC Radio1xtra
  • BBC Radio 2
  • BBC Radio 3
  • BBC Radio 6
  • Capital Xtra
  • Classic FM
  • Kiss FM

Examples of different music channels:
  • VIVA
  • MTV
  • 4Music
  • Smash Hits
  • Magic
  • Heat
  • Scuzz
  • Kerrang
  • Capital TV

My Chosen Song

I have chosen the song 'Magic' by Coldplay for my music video. As the genre of the song is categorised as pop with an element of rock, I have researched into what radio stations and music channels the band would be featured on...

Radio Stations -
BBC Radio 1
BBC Radio 2
BBC Radio 6
Capital Xtra
Kiss FM

Music Channels -
VIVA
MTV
4Music
Capital TV

Reflecting on my demographic research, the social class of my audience will be mainly class B - Middle Class. Therefore, as the majority of my target audience will have a considerable amount of money, they will be able to consume music in many ways. Hence, this is why there is a wide variety of radio stations and music channels that play pop music - so it can reach the middle class audience; which is currently the second wealthiest class with a vast amount of individuals in it.
